Of the four species of mantids that are found in Maryland, only the Carolina mantis is native. The female Carolina mantis can be green, brown, or gray like this one.

Since mantids consume large quantities of pest insects, they are routinely imported by gardeners. The Carolina mantis can be found in most of North America.

This female was waiting to ambush her lunch in a patch of wild flowers at North Point State Park.
