These tree swallows recently departed Cromwell Valley Park on their migration to their wintering grounds. Most of the populations of tree swallows in the eastern United States winter in Florida, Cuba or Central America.

  1. Amazing shots, Chris. All of them are gems and I really cannot pick a favourite. All different motions and spectrums of flight, going up and down. Also that is such a metallic blue the sparrows are sporting – but it could be due to the reflection of the sunshine. Wonderful work.

    1. Thanks Mabel!

These little birds really seem to have a playful attitude about them. They are always doing fantastic aerobatic stunts that are so much fun to watch; pairs of them will climb high into the a air and then chase each other to the ground, doing lots sharp turns, swoops and dives.

A friend claims that he has seem them playing with a feather; taking it high up and then dropping it and then chasing after it.

I’ve tried shooting video of their stunts, but I haven’t been able to keep them in the frame long enough to get an impressive clip.
