Great Blue Heron

These massive birds are rather elegant despite their intense eyes and dagger like bill. They tend to be solitary hunters and sometimes wade into water as deep as their bellies.

Although they stalk prey with slow and deliberate steps, they are lighting fast when they strike at fish and frogs. If you get too close to one it will likely scold you with a disapproving squawk as it takes flight.

Seeing one inflight is always a treat as their wingspan is tremendous, if you are lucky enough to have great blue heron pass overhead you will be impressed.
