Spotted Orb Weaver

As we enter late summer in Maryland you will begin to see orb weavers spending more time in the center of their webs during daylight hours.

This female spotted orb weaver is from last year and was making quick work of a wasp, paralyzing it and then wrapping it in silk to consume later.

All of this action occurred in a rose bush outside a suburban Starbucks, but from the aspect of this shot it might as well have happened on an alien world.
