This eastern garter snake was crossing Lake Roland in Robert E. Lee Park on Friday afternoon. The eastern garter snake is known for being a good swimmer and this one proved the point by making it across a wide portion of the lake in just a few minutes.

The color patterns on eastern garter snakes can vary, but this one has the classic checkerboard pattern on its black stripes.

It is right in the middle of mating season for these snakes and they were very active this Saturday as I sighted three of them in the space of 45 minutes while walking the shoreline of Lake Roland.
