Frozen Chesapeake

It has been a very cold winter in Maryland, and while it isn’t unusual to see ice in the Chesapeake Bay, it is a bit unusual to see this much ice.

This is the first time in several years that the Coast Guard has sent ice breakers into the bay to grind out channels for boat traffic.

The main stem of the bay still has open water, but many of the estuaries and coves are frozen.
