Belted Kingfisher

DSC_0064
Belted Kingfisher (female) photographed at Loch Raven Reservoir, Maryland – February 13, 2015

I’ve seen this female kingfisher surveying a small stream from the same power line before, but this is the first time I was able to get close enough for a usable shot.

Ordinarily I am happy to catch a bird in afternoon sunlight like this; however, her deep set eyes are lost to the shadows.

Still, a pretty good shot and the only one I captured on a very cold and breezy day. If you are out at Loch Raven Reservoir below the second dam, keep an eye open for these little kingfishers as they are a common sight.

The rust colored chest band lets us know this is a female, as the males do not have one.
