I’ve seen this female kingfisher surveying a small stream from the same power line before, but this is the first time I was able to get close enough for a usable shot.
Ordinarily I am happy to catch a bird in afternoon sunlight like this; however, her deep set eyes are lost to the shadows.
Still, a pretty good shot and the only one I captured on a very cold and breezy day. If you are out at Loch Raven Reservoir below the second dam, keep an eye open for these little kingfishers as they are a common sight.
The rust colored chest band lets us know this is a female, as the males do not have one.
